Varsity Blues

Jonathan Moxon(Van Der Beek), is a second string quaterback for the football religious town of West Cannan Coyotes. He sits on the bench, supposedly looking at play books, but really reading Kurt Vonnegut. Mox (as they call him), isn't a star. But his friend star quaterback Lance Harbor (Walker) is. Now here's the situation: the meniachal and pain killer pumping coach Bud Kilmer (Voight), has worked his head lineman Billy Bob (Lester), way too hard. And during a key game, Billy Bob falls and Harbor goes down, big time tearing the muscles in his knee. So it's up to Mox to come in and save the season. It's from the onset that Kilmer has it out for Mox, but he needs him to win his District championship. Now Mox is a star...in every way he did and didn't want to be. He is now a ladies man but that alienates him from his girfriend that he is so confused about: does he love her? He is also being courted by Lance's sexy girlfriend. His girlfriend hates his new-found fame, but Mox wants to milk it. He takes his team out to a strip club the night before a big game and they love him for it. Could all this really exist? Where football or any sport is placed above academics? Well the obvious answer is yes, but the movie is great fun, if not entirely predictable. I mean come on now: what's going to happen in the last game? I know tough questions make the brain think. B-
