Pulp Fiction
Directed By: Quentin Tarantino
The countless cop-offs that tried to capture Pulp Fiction’s power, style, and charisma all failed for one reason. That reason is that the copy-cats didn’t have one very important thing, and that is Quentin Tarantino. Tarantino is probably the first director to ever frame his movie so that it is purposely confusing. He created the memorable main characters of Jules (Samuel L. Jackson) and Vincent (John Travolta). These two philosophical hitmen are the soul of the movie, the actors carry it, while also allowing the supporting actors to step into the limelight. The secondary characters are even more impressive, such as Mia (Uma Thurman) and her husband Marsellus Wallace (Ving Rhames), both who are the most powerful characters in the movie. Ving Rhames plays the gang lord Marsellus with a touch of class and brings the film to a new climax during the infamous “Rape” scene.
The most original thing of this movie though, is it’s dialogue, that being whether they are discussing McDonald’s or Vincent trying to convince his drug dealing friend help him with Mia’s overdose. And all this was brought together by Tarantino (who makes a cameo in the movie as Jimmy from Toluca Lake), whose screenplay has one many accolades and is studied in film classes. The man is a visionary who has never (and quite possibly never will) match the success and the beautiful talent and filmmaking he has achieved in this film.
