Titanic
Directed By: James Cameron
The largest grossing film in history. The movie that captivated audiences into seeing it five, six, seven times. It cost upwards of $200 million dollars and was heralded by critics as one of the best movies of all time, and proved it by winning eleven Academy Awards. All this and everyone knew the way it would end. The ship would sink, most would die. It was destined. James Cameron’s stunning film achievement, the crown jewel. The man who had made The Abyss, Terminator 2, and True Lies. The movie was beautifully (and sometimes painstakingly accurate) set the bar up a few notches for all other filmmakers. On top of all this, the machismo director was essentially making a chick flick.

Some have compared the story of Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Rose (Kate Winslet) as Romeo and Juliet at sea. The marvel of it all is that the human story rises above the amazing effects displayed on screen. The story of star-crossed lovers has been done in countless films, but none more powerful as in Titanic. Cameron slaved over his epic film, working on the script for over two years and traveling down three and a half miles under the ocean to see the actual wreck at the bottom of the ocean. He even gave up his director’s fee so that the show could go on (he eventually earned over $60 million dollars in backend grosses). Titanic touches you in the only way it can, the human way.
