TIM BURTON
Tim Burton, bnow busy on the remake of Planet of the Apes is probably the most visually stunning director of all time. The director who sculpted out such classics as Batman (the first and second), Beetlejuice, and Edward Scissorhands has displayed a flair for the dark side of life. The filmmaker started off with Pee Wee's Big Adventure as his first major foray into directing, which although a "children's" movie, it has some serious dark undertones. He then moved into Dark Knight territory when he helmed Batman, his most successful movie. In this comic book adventure tale, he created Gotham City and all of it's inhabitants. He was the true maestro of macabre cinema.

In Burton's films you can definitely see the influences on him. From Frank Whale, who directed Frankenstein to Ed Wood, who Burton later went on to direct in the same titled movie. He has done experiments into clay-mation with The Nightmare Before Christmas (which he produced), is the tale of a outsider who just wants to break away from Halloween. If you look at all of Burton's films you see a common thread. They are all about outsiders. Batman was about a introverted superhero who didn't want to let anybody in. Edward Scissorhands was about a boy who no one liked because of a deformity. Even Sleepy Hollow was about the scared Ichabod Crane who is viewed as a freak of his profession. The only slip up in Burton's tenure is the absolutely awful Martian movie Mars Attacks, which should be purged from his record.

Right now Tim Burton is busily in production of Planet of the Apes a remake of the Charlton Heston apocalyptic thriller (again the story of a loner). It should be pretty interesting to see him display this film. His last effort was the stunning adaption of Sleepy Hollow, the story of the Headless Horseman and Ichabod Crane was shot completely on a soundstage, which is all the more befitting of the director. Perhaps one of the most interesting movie is the one he didn't do which was Superman Lives. What could the cinematic master have done with Nicolas Cage in the role? It's absolutely frightning to picture!
