In The Bedroom
Starring: Sissy Spacek, Tom Wilkinson, Nick Stahl, Maresi Tomei, William Mapother
Directed By: Todd Field

Coping with loss has become an important theme since September 11th, and Todd Field’s newest film explores that on a different level. Spacek and Wilkinson play parents to Nick Stahl, who is involved in an affair with a near-divorced woman played by Tomei. When their son is killed by the angry husband, it’s all they can do to not fall apart at the seams. When things become even worse after finding out that the murderer could get away, is when things truly begin to take a turn for the worse. The film boasts impressive performances from most of the cast, the Oscar nominated Spacek, Wilkinson, and Tomei are all top notch, I found the performance of the film to be that of William Mapother, who plays the murdering husband. This relative of Tom Cruise (come on, just look at him) finally delivers a performance that is at once both cold blooded and yet you kind of feel sorry for him. The only problem with the film is it’s ending, that just seems to come out of nowhere, and really doesn’t fit with what the characters true motivations are. It all just doesn’t add up. B-
