The Mothman Prophecies
Starring: Richard Gere, Laura Linney, Will Patton, Debra Messing
Directed By: Mark Pellington

Supernatural films have been changed forever by the hit show “The X-Files.” They are constantly compared to it, and most of the time the show is better than the movie. Richard Gere’s latest makes a valid attempt at breaking this trend. Gere plays John Klein, who after a freak car accident that leaves his wife (Messing) dead and a cryptic message just before she dies. Klein is traveling now and ends up in a town where The Mothman has been seen, but he doesn’t remember getting here. Laura Linney plays the town cop who has the inevitable task of figuring out what the hell is going on. The film has some incredibly spooky moments which reminded me of the scary and very underrated 1998 Ben Affleck film Phantoms. But what ultimately lets this film succeed is it’s cast. Will Patton is a standout as a scared resident of Point Pleasant. He plays it with such great ease; Patton is quickly becoming one of the best character actors in the business. Gere is, well he is Richard Gere, and that is saying a lot. Mothman provides for some decent scares among a decent cast. B
